Rotating within departments

On paper it is written that a Trainee Program is typically 6 months of rotations within 4 different departments. But what I experienced so far is that this structure tends to vary from one trainee to another. In my case, I will work in 7 departments with durations ranging from 1 to 7 months. As it is with most of the things, there are advantages and disadvantages depending on rotation durations. When one stays a long period of time in a department, one is able to work on larger projects and experience day-to-day duties and requirements. In shorter trainee stations (lets say 1 to 3 months), it is harder to have concrete projects due to the time restriction. At this point, being outgoing and having good communication skills becomes crucial. To be more specific, in my current department I am spending time to improve my technical knowledge on specific production processes but in order to limit the theoretical part I have decided to take part in weekly held group meetings, seminars and presentations to be able to; have a better understanding of the department structure, see how further process improvements are managed as well as to get to know the people and their duties. In my opinion staying too long in the same department with the same duties is not in the scope of a trainee program as one will experience this in a fixed position, and during short stays one should not get discouraged by small tasks and use initiative in order to get the most of it!
