Same department different position

Now that I have finished my 2nd rotation, I thought it might be interesting to make a short comparison between my first two department experiences. As I had mentioned earlier, the main tasks of the technology functions department are: doing research for continuous process improvement and special projects mainly requested by the production department. This department has many highly qualified researchers who work on very specific subjects using state of the art technologies. This creates a calm and more individual based working environment. On the other hand, the production department is under continuous pressure as pieces must be produced and each problem must be resolved as soon as possible in order to fulfil the planned production lot. Machine workers, engineers from other departments and suppliers are constantly coming in and out to speak with representatives from the production department. There is always something going on and people interact with each other constantly. So far, I realize that I enjoy working in a more interactive environment such as the production department.Since the beginning of last week, I am back in the production. This time I will be the project leader for the purchasing and construction of a new production line which will be used for a new project. My ultimate duty is to make sure that the machine is ready to function with the required quality and capacity before the given deadline. In order to do so, I will have to make sure that each and every responsible person working on the machine (R&D, production planners, mechanics, electricians, programmers, etc.) are on track for the delivery time.
