My road through the JUMP program

Constantino • 16.Juni, 2009 @ 03:52 • Abgelegt unter: Forschung und Entwicklung

My path towards the Bosch company began while I was living in France.  I applied to the “Careers In Europe” career fair which is a selective international career fair held twice a year in locations around the world; in this case it was being held in Berlin.  In order to attend, you must first submit your CV; then, if there are any companies which are interested in your candidature, they will ask you to come.  Fortunately, Bosch had shown interest in me and asked me to come to their interview.

At this point I had never even given Bosch a thought, nor did I know much about them except for their involvement in Power Tools.  Before going to the interview, I researched more about the whom, what, where and when of Bosch and found myself quite pleasantly surprised at how diverse of a company it is having a hand in all sorts of business: from packaging technology to the automotive industry to security systems.  This all clearly sparked my interest and thus I was eager to go into the interview.

During the interview (which was in English) I was told all about the “Junior Managers Program”.  I was told how Bosch was seeking high potential candidates to form and educated in such a way so that they would be the ideal candidates to help lead Bosch into the future as managers.  Hearing about the Junior Managers Program made me even more excited about the possibility of working for Bosch; I was thus hoping to get feedback soon after my first interview.

A few weeks after my first interview, I was told that the company was even more interested in me and wanted to see me for a second interview in Hildesheim (Blaupunkt).  Blaupunkt, at the time when it was still part of Bosch, was a sister company specializing in in-car audio and entertainment systems; everything from speakers, amplifiers and radios all the way to navigation systems.  The interview at Blaupunkt went really well and after waiting for a short bit, while HR and my future boss discussed my profile, I was handed a contract for the Junior Managers Program, specifically the engineering R&D program!  I was told that I would work on a project which deals with future uses of navigation systems in vehicles.

My particular program is a bit different than the typical program.  Normally, you would spend 6 months in 4 different stages, in order to get to know the company better while taking on different responsibilities and projects.  In my case, my boss wanted me to focus on the same engineering project for my entire 2 years but move to different business units in order to gain knowledge that would be useful for my particular project.  In this way, I could be much more useful to the project since I would be continually working in it.  So, after a few weeks of work and familiarization with the project, an official “plan” was created between me, my boss and the local HR.

I would spent two months in Hildesheim, then moved to Stuttgart for 5 months while working in the Research and Development business unit.  Afterwards, I went back to Hildesheim for 1 month, and then left for my foreign station for 6 more months.  After my foreign station I will go back to Hildesheim for 1 month before going back to Stuttgart for another 6 months.

As you can see, between each move I am going back to Hildesheim and apply what I have learned in my other stations; one note should be made though.  One of the benefits of the Junior Managers Program is that you will get to experience many sides of Bosch; however since I am working on the same project for my 2 years, this is rather limited since I have to stick to stations that deal only with my project.  Thus, for my foreign station (in which I am right now) I told my boss that I wanted to do something that had nothing at all to do with my project.  Therefore, for 6 months, I am working in sales and marketing as a product manager for the Buderus brand.  Finally, my last station is still undefined and will depend on what I am interested in, as well as what the project needs.  I find the fact that I can influence where I go very exciting and it allows me to gain invaluable experiences within Bosch.

So, are you still contemplating joining the Junior Managers Program?  Well, from my experience so far, I highly recommend it.  If you are ready to be mobile, to continually meet people from all sorts of backgrounds, and if you are looking for a professional challenge that will start your career path in the right direction, then look no further!  The Bosch Junior Managers Program is exactly what you are looking for.
